China is Vietnam's largest trading partner and a vital source of imports for its manufacturing sector. The two countries are already connected via a system of highways and two railway lines that are old and need upgrading on the Vietnam side. One of the planned high-speed lines would run from Vietnam's port cities of Haiphong and Quang Ninh through Hanoi to Lao Cai province, which borders China's Yunan province, the ministry said in a statement released late on Tuesday.

Vietnam aims to start building two high-speed railway lines linking its capital Hanoi with China before 2030, the Ministry of Planning and Investment said, another sign of a recent warming of ties between the two Communist-ruled neighbors. The two countries are already connected via a system of highways and two railway lines that are old and need upgrading on the Vietnam side. Earlier this month, Vietnam said it was seeking to learn from China to develop its first high-speed railway network and had sent its officials to work with Chinese railway companies. A massive high-speed railway line linking capital Hanoi with business hub Ho Chi Minh City is also being planned in the country. Trade between Vietnam and China in the first quarter of this year rose 22% from a year earlier to $43.6 billion, according to Vietnamese government data.

☆ Four killed in Vietnam coal mine collapse

HANOI, Aug 27 (Reuters) - Four people have been killed in a collapse in a coal mine in Vietnam's mining centre of Quang Ninh, the state-run Thanh Nien newspaper reported on Sunday. The accident happened late on Saturday at a mine operated by Vang Danh Coal Company, a unit of Vietnam's state coal miner Vinacomin, Thanh Nien reported. The newspaper did not give a reason for the collapse. In March a similar accident happened at a Vang Danh-operated mine but no one was killed. Vinacomin said last year that mine accidents killed at least 17 miners in the first nine months of 2022.

Vietnam targets LNG-sourced gas generating up to 22.4 gigawatts (GW) of power by 2030, enough to power 20 million households and account for nearly 15% of national power supply. Complicating LNG efforts, much of Vietnam's planned gas power investment is directed to the south of the country despite the under-served north's greater vulnerability to blackouts. Takafumi Akino of Tokyo Gas, which is building an LNG terminal and a gas plant in northern Quang Ninh province, predicted "hard negotiations". PV Gas said this month it was in talks with U.S. energy giant ExxonMobil and Russia's Novatek on LNG cooperation.

☆ Foxconn to invest $246 mln in 2 projects in northern Vietnam

HANOI, June 30 (Reuters) - The world's largest contract electronics maker and assembler, Foxconn (2354.TW), has received approval from Vietnam to invest $246 million in two new projects its northern province of Quang Ninh, the local authority said on Friday. The projects, by its unit Foxconn Singapore, will raise total investments by Foxconn in Vietnam to about $3 billion and will centre on the manufacture and assembly of telecom and electric vehicle (EV) parts, the provincial government said. The remaining $46 million is for a plant to produce electronics and telecommunication components, with production set to begin in October 2024. Foxconn, which has been in Vietnam for nearly two decades, also plans to set up a new factory in the central province of Nghe An. with an initial investment of $100 million, the provincial local authority said last month.
